Tonight's show at Southampton University is completely sold out and is a special "one off " warm up show for Athlete's forth-coming 6 date UK  tour in December. The excited crowd are well and truly warmed up by tonight's support band " TapeTheRadio" who are a three piece from London comprising of  m.c (Vocals/Guitars).caruso(Bass) and b.mclellan(Drums).
The band perform some really great sounding guitar based tracks including "Catching Stones" and "Stay Inside" which has some great harmonised vocals. Their last song of their short set was their latest single "Save a Life" which is available to buy in a originally designed numbered home made two track cd single, the song sounded really impressive and has apparently received some decent radio airplay recently, a decent set by a great new band.
Athlete take to the stage and the Southampton audience give the band an amazing welcome, all of this was before any of them have even picked up any musical instruments. Kicking of the evening with "El Salvador" from the album "Vehicles & Animals" the audience sing along with the band almost word perfect. There are many tracks played from the band's latest album "Black Swan" which includes some excellent tracks such as the single "Superhuman Touch" and the spine tingling "Black Swan Song" which tells the story of Joel Potts Grandfather Major John Potts who was nearly killed in a World War two battle in Holland, he lay injured thinking he was going to die for over 18 hours only to be rescued by two Dutch stretcher men. Joel delivers the song in such an very emotional and deeply personal way with it's prominent lyrics it is the highlight of this brilliant show. "Wild Wolves" an acoustic led track from the bonus disc of the latest album gets it's 1st live outing and impresses many of the audience. The band leave the stage to massive applause and the applause goes on continuously until eventually the band return giving the crowd just what they want a stunning version of "Wires" which once again gets everybody singing along at the top of their voices. This is how concert's should be both the band and the audience enjoying the music together in harmony, Athlete have a superb collection of music which they deliver honestly and in such an original way, I cannot understand why this band does not have a much larger following certainly after tonight's performance they deserve to be seen by many more people.
