Mudkiss is now an archived site, there will be no more updates. Mudkiss operated from 2008 till 2013.

We are not a dedicated monthly magazine, we'd rather let our creative juices strike as and when. So some months we might be overflowing with an abundance of ideas, whilst other months we might be taking it a little easier. Although that month I have yet to witness. Here you can read all our updates and news on a bi monthly basis.

Well Mudkiss has come to the end of another fantastic year, and actually the end altogether. (Yes, you read that correctly). Please read on.....

This is a message to all our friends, followers and countless contributors over the past 5 years and a half years.

"Anyone who has ever managed a long standing music webzine/ magazine will appreciate it takes a massive amount of dedication, organisational skills, time Managment and patience. Many hours are spent pouring over e- mails, following up PRs for passes, organising interviews, reviews, keeping up with what the team are doing, challenging issues with arise, social networking, and that's before you begin to edit the site. So there comes a time when you have to consider future plans and where to aim your arrow next year.

As the new year is upon us the time is right to move forward with fresh ideas. I have deliberated and agonised over my next statement for a few months now. Therefore I have come to the decision which I have been dreading to say and that is to wind down mudkiss for the foreseeable future. My aim is to take more time out to concentrate on mudkiss photography and to just chill out a bit more, leave myself more time for personal pursuits.

My lust for music has brought me in contact with some amazingly creative people and very often really nice too. I've had some amazing experiences which I'll never forget. Lots of other opportunities fell into our lap like being asked to take part in a radio show, then being offered our very own mudkiss show, (Pure Mudkiss) a regular slot on a TV music program (which was decline for location reasons). Mudkiss also had our very own one off live showcase event back in 2012. Four Mudkiss interview books have been self published and a photo calendar was published each year since we began.

I think we can hand on heart say we achieved everything and more we ever hoped to when myself and Lorraine set out on our little music based hobby back in June 2008.

It's been both a pleasure and privilege to be a part of the roller coaster journey into the music industry. I'd like to end with a few words from former Managing Editor Andy Barnes who when I told him a few weeks back of my intention he said so fittingly ' it's like the end of an era'.

(Mudkiss Facebook for now will remain and twitter. As for the it will remain as an archive site) So I'd just like to say a BIG thanks to everyone for supporting us, playing a part in our lives and to everyone who has contributed to Mudkiss over the years" - Mel

Our 2013 highlights and favourites: We asked some of the Mudkiss team for their top five from the year. So we got books, photos, gigs, albums and errrrm cat biscuits...:-) Contributions from Mel, Eva, Svenja, Mary, Dick, Lee, Den, Paul, Gareth, and Mike. It went something like this....

Sterotypes: We’re living in a box - By Coco Fierce

"I longed to stand out. So do all of my friends and we sit on the stage together in a college canteen, swapping anecdotes and planning this Summer’s festivals. People called us ‘moshers’ and I loved being categorised. But teenagers do, don’t they...but I grew out of this. It seems other adults haven’t quite matured past this though."

The Show Must Go On....But Does It Have To? - reporting by Coco Fierce

"There are some things you just don’t say in public…for example, admitting that you fancy Boris Johnson or that you once did a little wee in the swimming baths. It is a good job I don’t really care about social etiquette as if I don’t get something off my chest, I think I may explode in a jibbering heap"

Keith Levene's all time top ten [12] Albums At The Moment - Interview by Melanie Smith

Keith was asked if he would compile a list of his top ten albums of all time. A difficult task for anyone, but with much thought he came up with this surprising list comprised of not ten but twelve albums! We chatted about his choices via skype, all the way from a sun-drenched Florida and here is what he came up with and it goes something like this....

Well the year is almost coming to a close, and what a year its been. Its been so busy that unfortunately I have had no spare time to edit our Annual Mudkiss interview book. So for the first time in 4 years we have no 2012 book coming out, which is sad but I guess you could say we are a victim of our own success. As anyone knows who manages any kind of online music zine, it is hard work and can be stressful at times, juggling everything that a decent site demands, e-mails, sorting out gigs, interviews, going out reviewing, photographing, and putting it all together, social networking,  plus holding down a full time job. So rather than crash and burn we try to take a break around December to recharge our batteries and see if we have the energy, determination, patience to go forth for yet another year. However during this time we shall still continue to post previews/videos and items of interest, we won't be completely dead. We just need to as the posters say.....stay cool and chill out.

Well the Festival season is slowly coming to a close, and the dismal dark nights are drawing in. We've done quite a few Festivals again this year, not as many as we might like to do, but still keeping our hand in. Of course this year was a first for us at the  great explosion of colour at Rebellion in Blackpool, what a superb weekend that was. I think we are still recovering, and of course being supportive with our local music Festivals, the Warrington Festival and Rochdale. Also we managed to get press accreditation for Boomtown Fair, Liverpool Sound City, Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia, Cambridge Folk Festival, Dot To Dot, and Nice & Sleazy. We had our  very own Northern Mudkiss Event and it was a great success. All proceeds from the night went to the bands taking part. Maybe another in Manchester this next year....who knows? [I have yet to do a little write up about it, but we have been so busy since then]

Are there any budding music reviewers keen to join Mudkiss? We are looking for dedicated and committed writers, maybe you are a student keen to have a go? We are getting a steady influx of newly released albums, singles and EP's. We would look at the very least 3 albums a month for you to review. Mudkiss are having a musical showcase night, featuring three bands/musicians who we have worked with over the past year, with interviews, reviews and photoshoots. They are three local bands, apart from two members of 'Dressing For Pleasure' who hail from Birmingham.Heading the evening's entertainment we have Warrington's magnificent psychedelic, rock band 'The Phoenix Experiment', and another Warrington talent in the form of 'Chris Fox', or Foxy as I call him. Chris is normally the lead singer in 'Kindest Of Thieves' but this evening he will be performing his own brand of acoustic melancholia tunes. The gorgeous, three women in 'Dressing For Pleasure', will certainly be pleasuring you this evening, with their line in vintage tinged, alternative rock. Quite possibly dressed in vintage corsets and attire, these luscious, and talented musicians were one of the support acts who toured with Adam Ant on his 2011 comeback tour. And last but not least we have the gregarious Master of Ceremonies Mr Les Glover, who is also a master guitar player.

* On a sadder note, during our trip to Rebellion we were taken aback to hear that local musician Daniel Rimmer had passed away. A former singer with the excellent Warrington band The 66 and then going onto form his own band White Vinyl, both bands we had covered in reviews or interviews over the years. Daniel was an excellent frontman and it goes without saying that he will be sadly missed by friends and family. Rest in peace 'Rimmer' you'll always be the Jim Morrison of Warrington.

Lot's of things have been happening, both on the frontline and behind the scenes, as usual we have been busy, whether it be organising an interview/photoshoot or planning a gig or two. In addition we have had some fantastic nights of gigs and for me shooting them, which is an added bonus.

This month has been spent conducting interviews and shoots with some very inspiring and interesting individuals,  all different, with lots of stories to tell, from half a day at Chris Hewitt's studio hearing tales about his career in music, and gazing at his collection of musical memorabilia, to a few hours with the talented Louise Distras, over a yummy lunch at the Soup Kitchen, with a photo shoot afterwards. A very sunny afternoon in Manchester interviewing and shooting a visiting rock n' roll couple up from the big smoke, the Authoress of Johnny Thunders biography 'In Cold Blood' Nina Antonia and The Deadcuts Jerome Alexandre.

My photography website is now ready, yet I am still adding photos from 2011 and 2010, please feel free to stop by and check it out.

The mudkiss Annual 2011 is now available and can be found at the link on the home page.

February soon swept by, I had a lovely short break, where I indulged in a little trip to Venice, partaking in a spot of sight seeing and a ride in a Gondola, amongst other things. Back in the bosses seat and catching up with the website once more....keep us in your favourites and follow closely you never know where we might lead you....

March was a round of whirlwind shows, photographing some brilliant bands, amongst those were singer/songwriter Jordan Reyne in Bolton, a wonderful photography experience. March was tinged with some sadness, as we learnt that Wigan band The Adjusters were hanging up their guitars and splitting in different directions, still good mates but wanting to do different stuff. We caught their last show in Wigan for a rousing finale and I grabbed two of the Guys for a photoshoot at an abandoned housing estate. Watch out for singer Ash as his tattooing is going to be even more extreme in the coming months...and we have been promised an exclusive on what they do next!

April saw us planning a Mudkiss Music Showcase event, at The Railway Venue in Bolton, scheduled for Friday Oct 5th, we''ll have more news closer to the time. We aim to have three very diverse bands playing and all will be revealed in the course of time. It was also another month of fantastic shows, we've hardly had time to draw breath.

The Mudkiss book is out and is selling pretty well so far - the book is published by and is a non profit book. It features most of the interviews from 2011 - in total 67 and you can buy it here for £12.00 & p&p :

So now feast your eyes on our multi genre musical [indie, country, metal, rockabilly, rock and punk] updates from March & April below:

Liz Lacey:  Happy New Year 2012

A Year In Review 2011 By Nigel Cartner

Posted by Melanie Smith on November 6, 2011 at 12:05 AM

Hi Folks, Mel at the helm....its been another rocking year but as we slowly work our way towards the festive season we hope things will start to slow down a little. Although the gig circuit is still proving to be pretty lively, and we are hoping to see amongst others The Miserable Rich, Girls, Opeth, Kvelertak, The Darkness, Anna Calvi, EMA, Zola Jezus, plus more...

We hope to catch one or two bands before the Christmas shut down but we are looking at taking a two week break for the holidays, to re charge our batteries, then resume service in the New Year. We've all worked exceptionally hard this year and I'd like to thank each and every one of you for everything you have contributed to our little piece of the internet, for the dedication, loyalty and most of all your friendships.

I'd like to say a special thanks to Les Glover for his Alice Cooper review in November and may he write many more for us. I'd like to welcome Liz Lacey from Liverpool to our team, we are hoping that she is going to be producing a monthly column of interesting this space. Also Emily Church, who comes from the now defunct wonderful Bubblegum Slut Magazine, she is keen to write some stuff for us.

We have some new interviews planned - but as usual if we talk about it - then it doesn't happen.

Next year we look forward to seeing our cover band Earth prayer featured in Classic Rock Magazine, local bands Exile Parade & Kindest Of Thieves début album releases in the new year. I hope to start on the Annual Interview book which will feature selected interviews from 2011, there have been so many this year, that I am going to have to be a bit selective in the book or it'll be far too expensive to produce. I think we must be hitting 75 this month, a record breaker so far for us. I've absolutely loved all the photographic opportunity's which have come my way this year, in recent weeks I shot some cracking musicians The Specials, New York Dolls and Alice Cooper, all legends in their own fields, plus newer female musicians Nerina Pallot and The Pierces.

After a hectic Summer, the Mudkiss team are relaxing, putting their feet up and looking forward to a quiet introduction to Autumn.  Like hell they are!!

Festival season is far from over, we have new boy Callum at Leeds Festival this weekend.  Assuming he stays sober enough, a review of Friday’s activities including headliners Muse playing the whole of their “Origin Of Symmetry” album will be forthcoming.

Mel and Andy are covering The Rochdale Feelgood Festival, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Fun Lovin Criminals (Watch out Huey, Mel has her photographic eye on you!!) Badly Drawn Boy, Frankie and the Heartstrings, Ellen and the Escapades and Doyle and the Forefathers.  Looks like September 3rd will be a busy day for the intrepid two.

Over the same weekend, we’re also going to infiltrate Bingley Music Live where Feeder, The Coral, The Mystery Jets and White Denim are all performing.  Keep an eye on the site for more news.

Looking slightly further down the line, especially for the more extreme music fan, The Sophie Festival is taking place on Saturday November 19th at Ashton Town Hall in Tameside,  supporting The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a charity set up after the tragic death of Sophie, killed simply for looking different. The aim of the foundation is to provide educational group-works that will challenge the prejudice and intolerance towards people from alternative subcultures and to campaign to have the UK Hate Crime legislation extended to include people from “alternative subcultures” or “Lifestyle and Dress.”  It’s a worthy cause, very dear to the hearts of many music fans and it will be a fantastic day of hard and heavy music.  Definitely one for the diary.

On the gig front, we have reviewers out and about for P.J Harvey, The Subways, Anna Calvi, Beirut and You, Me at Six (How did they get in there!!.)  We also have reviews and interviews scheduled with Viv Albertine ex of The Slits, LA sleaze rockers The Icarus Line, Alpines and the new face of major label British Heavy Metal, Rise to Remain, who signed with EMI earlier this year.

As if that weren’t enough, we’ll have the usual album and singles reviews including new releases from (love em or hate em, you can’t deny they are BIG) Noel Gallagher and Coldplay.

It’s a chaotic few weeks ahead, but that’s we like it at Mudkiss.  Bookmark the Facebook page and the site, especially the preview section where you’ll find updated details of all the latest festivals, tours and releases.

Meanwhile over in the photographic corner I've had a couple of interesting shoots, from a young Guy called Sam Millar with the most brilliant 80's hair I've seen in a long time. He also plays in a local band, inspired by his favourite band Darkness. A great photographic day out at Rochdale Feelgood festival, meeting lots of bands and its always such a good vibe here, looking forward to next year. J P Harvey was brilliant but such a shame I was too late for the photo pass, had to content with my point and shoot, which ultimately fails to get that money shot. My jaunt to London in September was such a blast, not only did I have chance to catch up with my co-partner in crime Lorraine but got to meet some lovely people, who are known as the rock band 'Earth Prayer' and shot some of them naked in Regents Park. Heid Jo Hines the singer, who we interviewed earlier in the year has to be one of the most beautiful people [inside and out] I have ever photographed, I guess genes plays a big part in it, her parents are Denny Laine [Moody Blues/Wings] and the Model Jo Jo Hines. It was also one of the funniest shoots I've done to date.

Remember I am available on Fridays and weekends if you want to contact me for prices and ideas.

Andy kick starts this months blog....It’s onwards and upwards in the Mudkiss camp as festival season really takes a grip. Press accreditations have been received for Haigh Hall, Chester Rocks, Warrington Festival, Cloud 9, Ben & Jerrys and Hop Farm, exemplifying the spread of music covered on the site.  From the grass roots of the North West scene, extending to luminaries The Lightning Seeds, Morrissey, Lou Reed, and Iggy and the Stooges, the team looking to spread the word of great music wherever the opportunities arise.

As if the festivals weren’t enough, numerous gigs are lined up particularly around Manchester and London. Did you see the incredible performance by Vintage Trouble on Jools Holland a couple of months ago, if not, don’t worry, we’re down at Manchester Academy next week with a full report, photos and video to follow soon after.  A number of interviews are also currently under discussion, further details to be revealed soon, Mudkiss looking to hit hard and heavy over July and August.

Add in the regular album and singles features, including the thoughts and opinions of fresh young Fanzine blood, you have a heady mix of youth and experience bringing the music you need to hear direct to your computer whenever you want it.

Don’t believe me?  Check out our June portfolio, interviews with The Specials Roddy Byers, Rasp Thorne, Heidi Jo Hines, The Travelling Band and journalist, musician and all round great guy John Robb.  Live reviews include Morrissey, The Avett Brothers, Kitty Daisy and Lewis, Kings of Leon, The Pierces, Adam Ant, The Travelling Band (local favourites) and The Lovely Eggs.  Get the idea? - Catch you all in another month, assuming we all survive!!"

Mel: The first day of July saw me photographing Kevin Cummins no less, the grandmaster of the lens himself, the Chief photographer for the NME for 30 years. I only managed 5 minuties with him, but he was more than happy to engage with me for a couple of photos and some banter. I hope to write up a little something about the talk he gave also. It's a busy few months ahead for me photography wise, with either Phil or Andy at the reviewing end I will be following along with my Nikon attached to my rucksack. I also have some portrait shoots planned and its a busy few months ahead for interviews and shows. Keep reading......not one but two lil' photoshoots in the past month with proffesional photographers, and next up was another Mancunian Karen McBride, in the wonderful setting of Castlefield, concluding with a great interview. I learnt quite a lot from Karen and so we are going to do a bit of collaborating, watch this space folks. Check out Karen's 'fucking good photography' -

The highlight of the month so far has to be standing in the photo pit under the legend that is Iggy Pop - I was quivering so much with excitement its a wonder I got as many photos out of the two songs slot at all.
